Knowing the right wedding DJ questions to ask before booking can make a huge difference to your wedding evening.
The evening party is usually the part guests remember most. Nobody talks about what time the chairs were put out or whether the napkins matched the flowers — they remember whether the dancefloor was full and whether everyone had a good night.
That is why choosing the right DJ matters.
If you are currently comparing wedding DJs, here are some important questions worth asking before booking.

Wedding DJ Questions About Experience
Not every DJ does.
Some DJs mainly work in pubs, bars, birthdays, or clubs and only occasionally take weddings when they come in. Weddings are completely different and require a different level of planning and experience.
A wedding DJ needs to understand changing timelines, announcements, first dances, room atmosphere, and how to keep the evening flowing naturally. A good wedding DJ is not simply turning up and pressing play for five hours.
At weddings, timings often change slightly throughout the day. Speeches can overrun, food service can be delayed, and guests can drift back later than expected. A professional wedding DJ should be able to adapt without making the evening feel rushed or stressful for the couple.
At Heard The Beat, timelines are always flexible, but I keep an eye on timings throughout the evening so couples can enjoy themselves without worrying about constantly checking the clock.

Wedding DJ Questions About Music
This is probably one of the biggest things couples should ask before booking a DJ.
A lot of cheaper DJs will use very similar playlists every weekend. Maybe a few songs change here and there, but overall it becomes the same set reused at multiple weddings.
No couple wants their wedding to feel like the same playlist the DJ used the weekend before.
At Heard The Beat, couples receive their own request page where they can submit requests before the wedding. We also arrange a Zoom meeting 2–4 weeks before the event to discuss timings, music preferences, first dances, must-play songs, and anything they absolutely do not want played.
That planning makes a huge difference on the night because it allows the music to feel personal rather than generic.
Guest requests during the evening can also help create a fun atmosphere, but experience matters here as well. A good DJ knows how to balance requests without killing the vibe of the dancefloor. Of course, anything on the bride and groom’s do-not-play list is avoided completely.

Wedding DJ Questions About Equipment
Most couples never even think to ask this until they see the DJ turn up.
Your DJ setup becomes part of the room for the entire evening, so appearance matters far more than people often realise.
There is a huge difference between a modern professional wedding setup and an older dated setup with exposed cables and tired-looking equipment.
At Heard The Beat, I use professional-grade sound and lighting equipment along with DJ booth screens to create a cleaner and more modern look. A lot of cheaper DJs are still using equipment that looks like it belongs in a social club from years ago.

Do You Carry Backup Equipment?
This is one of the most important questions couples forget to ask.
Technology can fail sometimes. That is simply reality. The important thing is whether your DJ is prepared for it.
At Heard The Beat, I carry backup equipment for pretty much everything. Not only does this provide peace of mind, but it also gives flexibility when working in different venues and room sizes.
If something unexpected happens, the evening can continue smoothly without guests even noticing there has been an issue.
How Early Do You Arrive?
If a DJ says they arrive exactly at the event start time, that should probably ring alarm bells.
At Heard The Beat, I normally arrive around an hour and a half before the evening starts. The setup itself may only take around 30–45 minutes, but the additional time allows for traffic delays, venue access, sound checks, and any delays earlier in the wedding day.
It also means setup can be completed calmly and professionally without rushing around minutes before guests enter the room.
Have You Played The Venue Before?
Every venue is different.
Some venues have awkward load-ins, stairs, sound limiters, tight setup spaces, or strict access times. These are all things that can affect the evening if they are not planned properly.
If I have not worked at a venue before, I will normally check it out beforehand so there are no surprises on the day. This is the sort of thing couples should not have to stress about themselves.
Do You Offer Anything Else Alongside DJing?
A lot of couples now prefer booking entertainment packages rather than organising multiple suppliers separately.
Photo booths are especially popular because they give guests something fun to do throughout the evening while also creating memories people can take away with them. They are always a crowd favourite and work brilliantly alongside the dancefloor atmosphere.
At Heard The Beat, we offer DJ and photo booth packages for weddings and events across Portsmouth and Hampshire.

Are The Reviews Recent?
Reviews matter, but recent reviews matter even more.
When comparing wedding DJs online, it is always worth looking at how recent the reviews are and whether they specifically mention weddings. Videos and real event content can also tell you a lot more than a simple star rating.
Comments about professionalism, communication, and atmosphere are usually far more valuable than generic one-line reviews.
Are You Booking Directly With The DJ?
A lot of couples do not realise they are sometimes speaking to booking agencies rather than the DJ themselves.
Personally, I always think it is better to book directly. Communication feels far more personal, planning becomes easier, and you know exactly who is turning up on the night.
With Heard The Beat, you deal with me directly from the first enquiry right through to being behind the decks on your wedding night.
Is Booking A Cheap Wedding DJ Worth It?
This is probably the biggest mistake couples make when planning their evening entertainment.
People will happily spend thousands on dresses, flowers, decor, and cakes, but then try and save money on the entertainment — which is usually the part guests remember most afterwards.
Like most things, you generally get what you pay for.
Cheaper DJs often spend less time planning, use older equipment, carry limited backup gear, and rely on the same recycled playlists every weekend. That does not mean the most expensive DJ is automatically the best, but professionalism, preparation, and experience absolutely matter at weddings.
Final Thoughts
The right wedding DJ should feel like more than somebody who simply turns up with speakers.
They should help guide the evening, understand the atmosphere you want, keep the night flowing naturally, and help create the kind of party people still talk about afterwards.
Taking the time to ask the right questions before booking can make a massive difference to the overall experience on your wedding day.
